Project Description

Rockland Homes for Heroes (RH4H), a distinguished charitable organization in Orangetown, NY, has recently unveiled the completion of the Homes for Heroes II project nestled within the historic Camp Shanks property. This landmark initiative stands as a testament to RH4H’s unwavering dedication to providing sustainable and affordable permanent housing for honorably discharged veterans. Camp Shanks, a vital hub during World War II, played a pivotal role as a significant departure point for troops, earning the nickname “Last Stop USA.” This extensive 2,000-acre camp stood as the largest embarkation site for the WWII Army, processing 1.3 million personnel, including 75% of D-Day troops. After the war, it underwent a transformation into housing for veterans, providing support to those with families in New York City through the GI Bill. Shanks Village closed in 1954, commemorated by a small museum in June 1994. Rockland Homes for Heroes (RH4H) acquired 15 acres in 2013, dedicating half to Orangetown and constructing eight affordable apartments for homeless veterans. RH4H inaugurated its first units in Tappan in November 2013, with plans to further expand the project using the abandoned buildings from the 1950s.

Project Highlights

Homes for Heroes II, completed in November 2023, emerges as a beacon of hope, comprising 14 meticulously designed onebedroom units tailored to accommodate individuals with disabilities. With a profound commitment to both veterans and environmental responsibility, this $5.4 million development exemplifies RH4H’s vision for creating resilient and supportive communities that honor the sacrifice of those who have served. The Homes for Heroes II initiative not only delivers sustainable housing for veterans but also sets a precedent for future developments prioritizing environmental responsibility and community well-being. Notably, Homes for Heroes II achieved Energy Star Single Family New Homes Version 3.1 Certification with a remarkable HERS Index of 41, signifying a substantial 59% reduction in energy use compared to the 2006 Energy Code. The attainment of LEED for Homes v4.1 Platinum Certification underscores the project’s commitment to resilience, healthier materials, energy savings, and overall value. With an all-electric design, the development eliminates fossil fuel usage, reducing carbon emissions. Features such as highly insulated units, Energy Star Windows, and efficient appliances contribute to the project’s comprehensive energy efficiency. NYSERDA incentives amounting to $49,000 bolster the endeavor, while the integration of LED lighting, WaterSense labeled fixtures, and Energy Recovery Ventilators ensures both resource conservation and a health-conscious indoor environment. Rockland Homes for Heroes has successfully demonstrated that sustainable and affordable housing can go hand in hand. Homes for Heroes II serves as a symbol of optimism for veterans, establishing an exemplary benchmark for upcoming projects in the pursuit of sustainable and inviting living spaces.

“Homelessness is a life without a future. It breeds loneliness, despair, hopelessness, depression, addiction and – too often – suicide. We’re fighting to give out veterans a chance to create a meaningful life for themselves outside of uniform”

— Capt. John Allen Murphy
